Washington, D.C. | May 14, 2025 — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a comprehensive national campaign to combat the alarming rise in cybercrime across the United States. The move follows a sharp increase in internet-related offenses that have disrupted businesses, compromised personal data, and drained billions from the U.S. economy.

According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report for 2024, over 990,000 complaints were filed, representing losses exceeding $12.5 billion — the highest figure recorded in a single year. The most reported threats include ransomware attacks, business email compromise (BEC) scams, phishing campaigns, and fraudulent investment schemes.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, addressing the press at FBI Headquarters, stated:

Cybercriminals are evolving rapidly. Their tactics are more sophisticated, their reach is global, and the damage they cause is very real. We are responding with equal force.

To address this growing threat, the Bureau has:

  • Expanded its Cyber Division, adding new field offices and cyber task forces
  • Formed international partnerships with Europol, Interpol, and cybersecurity agencies worldwide
  • Launched Operation Digital Shield, targeting cybercriminal networks involved in extortion, data breaches, and financial fraud
  • Increased public awareness campaigns focused on cyber hygiene and scam detection

The FBI is also investing in advanced AI-driven threat detection tools and enhancing its digital forensics units to trace attacks more effectively.

Private sector collaboration is a key pillar of the strategy. Several major tech companies and financial institutions are now working hand-in-hand with the FBI’s Joint Cyber Task Forces to respond quickly to threats, share intelligence, and build preventive systems.

This is more than law enforcement. It’s a national defense issue, said Assistant Director Bryan Vorndran of the FBI Cyber Division. “Everyone — from individuals to corporations — must treat cybersecurity as a top priority.”

The FBI is urging citizens and businesses to remain vigilant, update their systems, and report suspicious activities to the proper authorities.
